HOBE SOUND — It wasn’t all that unusual to see adults arriving at a party dressed up in various costumes the Saturday before Halloween. What was unique though, was seeing everyone arrive with a grocery bag filled with juice boxes and nutrition bars.

It was recently reported that nearly 31% of children on the Treasure Coast get their only nutritious meals of the day while at school, often going hungry at night and all weekend. The Back Packs for Students program provides back packs filled with easy to prepare food for students who do not have nutritious food in their homes. Once a week, these students are given the Back Packs to take home and when they return it, the Back Pack is refilled. Guests invited to the Murray Insurance Services Halloween Party were asked to bring items appropriate for the Back Packs for Students schools pantry.

“When my staff and I heard that so many of our kids in this community are going hungry, we really wanted to do something to help,” said Shannon Murray, President of Murray Insurance Services and the father of two young children himself. “Having our guests donate items for this program was a good way to get everyone involved, and also to raise awareness about this issue. Most of our guests didn’t realize that hunger was such an issue in our own community.”

The Food Drive held by Murray Insurance Services was a part of The Great Treasure Coast Holiday Food Drive organized by the Treasure Coast Food Bank. Murray Insurance Services also recently participated in the Epilepsy Walk in downtown Stuart and in the Palm City Chamber of Commerce Fall Festival.
